LEAGUE COMES TO A CLOSE
This Friday night is probably Monaghan United Ladies final and biggest game of the season. United Ladies sit 2nd in the Premier A league 1 point behind Bray Wanderers but the Monaghan girls have 1 game in hand and they travel to 3rd placed Cabinteely knowing that a win will give United their third league title in a row and a draw will give them a play off against Bray at a neutral venue.
But a defeat will leave them in the runners up spot.
United ladies are guaranteed promotion into senior from Intermediate but it is the league title that they really want. The ladies have only been beaten twice in 13 league games this season so hopefully lady luck will be on their side this Friday night
Eureka Kells 1 v 3 Monaghan United Ladies.
The Monaghan United Ladies travelled to Kells last Monday night and came away with a hard earned 3-1 win against a tough Eureka side.
Even though Eureka had nothing to play for, they made sure that if Utd were going to have any chance of winning the league that hopefully they would be the ones to stop them.
Both teams started strongly but it was United who grabbed the opening goal when Natasha Graham made a great run down the right wing to get past the Eureka left back and whip in a low cross which was met by her sister Charlene at the back post and she drilled the ball into the back of the Eureka net giving the keeper no chance.
Both sides had chances but neither were unable to create an opening. H-T 0-1.
Utd started to dominate the 2nd half and had several chances to wrap the game up but poor finishing and being caught off side too often was making life difficult for Utd. On the 60th min Utd grabbed that 2nd goal that they needed when some fine work by Charlene Graham set up Diane Dempsey so smash the ball into the back of the Eureka net.
All credit to Eureka they never gave up and continued to push Utd all the way but the game was wrapped up in the 79th min when Utd striker Charlene Graham scored her second of the night when she went on a run beating 4 defenders to drill the ball into the bottom corner of the net giving the Eureka keeper no chance.
Eurekas never say die attitude finally paid off when they were awarded a free kick at the edge of the box in the 83rd min. The Eureka Kells captain blasted the ball in to the top corner of the Utd net giving keeper Michelle Mooney no chance. This rallied Eureka but time was not on their side and Utd grabbed their 11th win of the season.

Monaghan United 7 - 0 Leixlip United
Monaghan United had an emphatic win at home at Kingspan Century Park on Monday when they beat Leixlip United 7 – 0.
From the kick off United went on the offensive and it was surprising that we had to wait until 15th. minute for the opening score. The goal was scored by Katie O’ Connor after she was played through following a great run and pass from Diane Dempsey.
United continued to pressurise and 3 minutes later it was Diane Dempsey who doubled the lead with a powerful header from Charlene Grahams corner. From the restart Leixlip went on a rare attack which was broken up by Susanne Gordon, her long clearance picked out Katie O’Connor, she swung in a long ball from the left wing and Charlene Graham met it on the volley at the back post and United were 3 nil up.
Charlene Graham got her second goal 10 minutes later, she was played through by Michele Newell and from18 yards Charlene struck a blistering shot which cannoned off both posts before crossing the goal line. It was all one way traffic now and we saw a brilliant move involving the Graham sisters, Charlene passed out to Natasha who darted down the wing and then returned the ball to Charlene who volleyed from the edge of the box, the ball had goal written all over it but unfortunately one of the Leixlip defenders got the slightest off touches to deflect it for a corner.
United came close a few minutes later following another good move started by Dian Dempsey who passed to Charlene Graham to Katie O’ Connor who shot wide. Despite serious pressure from United they had no further scores in the first half.
United commenced the second half in the same manner as they played through out the first 45 and it wasn’t long until they were 5 nil up when Charlene Graham completed her hat trick, this ended the game as a contest and Leixlip who had no subsistutes were reduced to ten when one of their defenders had to leave the pitch injured. A brilliant strike from 25 yards to the roof of the net by Caoimhe Dolan saw United go six ahead and when Eva Norkeivicute took on and beat the keep she completed the scoring for United.
This was a fine all round performance from United every time they went forward the looked like scoring, the defenders were very much on top which meant that Michele Mooney in goals had a very quiet evening.
The team:- Michelle Mooney, Sinéad Mc Cooey, Michelle Moore, Megan Healy, Caoimhe Dolan, Charlene Graham. Michaela Newell, Suzanne Gordon, Natasha Graham, Katie O’Connor, Diane Dempsey.
Subs :- Eva Norkeivicute, Sabby Barrett, Anne Corbett,
WFAI – National Intermediate Cup
Monaghan United 1-1 Eureka Kells (aet)
United win on penalties 3 -0
After a very tight entertaining 110 minutes of football Monaghan United Ladies advanced to semi-finals of the WFAI National Intermediate Cup. However the victory was not without its cost as star centre forward Suzanne Gordon had to leave the pitch with a fractured wrist.
United started the strongest with Suzanne Gordon striking the post from 20 yards in the opening quarter hour and they were finally awarded for all their pressure on the half hour mark when they got the opening score. The move for the goal commenced with Natasha Graham when she crossed the ball from the bye-line into the 6 yard box picking out Diane Dempsey at the back post who headed strongly past the stranded Kells keeper.
This score appeared to spur Kells into action and they started coming more into the game but their best efforts came from long range strikes which didn’t unduly worry United’s keeper Michelle Mooney. Despite some good chances from both sides neither could add to the score line before the halftime whistle.
Kells started the second half the stronger of the two sides. In 65 minute Kells got back on par with a very controversial goal, they broke quickly out of defence from a Monaghan attack and it fell to a Kells striker who was disposed by Megan Healy at the edge of the penalty area, the Kells player regained the ball when she clearly pushed Megan to the ground and to the consternation of the supporters the referee and assistant who were well placed failed to see the infringement and allowed the Kells striker to continue and score.
Monaghan felt very aggrieved and there followed an exciting fare for the remainder of the game. The game had to go to extra time, again neither side could break the deadlock from play although United have their keeper Michelle Mooney to thank for bringing off an excellent save in the 90th. minute.
United had a good call for a penalty when one of Kells defenders handled the ball over her head in a crowded area again the officials chose to ignore claims.
When neither side scored it went to penalties and United settled the issue when they dispatched the first three strikes from Sharon McAree, Charlene Graham and Natasha Graham and since Kells missed their first three penalties United marched on to the All- Ireland semi finals.
The team:- Michelle Mooney, Sinéad Mc Cooey, Michelle Moore, Sharon Mc. Aree, Megan Healy, Caoimhe Dolan, Charlene Graham. Michaela Newell, Suzanne Gordon, Natasha Graham, Diane Dempsey.
Subs :- Eva Norkeivicute, Sabby Barrett, Anne Corbett, Fiona Mc. Andrew, Selina Moynagh,
Premier A League
Monaghan United 3 - 0 Bray Wanderers
The ladies league continued on Monday evening when Monaghan United played hosts to leaders Bray Wanderers. United got the dream start when with scarcely a minute elapsed they were awarded a free at the edge of the box from which Charlene Graham crashed her strike to the back of the net. Three minutes later before Bray had a chance to recover they found themselves two down when Natasha Graham added to her sisters goal when she curled a 25 yard strike with her weaker left foot to the roof of the net.
Monaghan continued to dominate against a poor visiting side and it was no surprise when as early as 16 minutes United had made it 3 nil, some very poor defending allowed Suzanne Gordon through and she had a simple tap in. In 25th minute Bray felt they had a good call for a penalty when Sinead McCooey appeared to take down one of the forwards but the referee saw it as a good tackle, this was about the only decent chance that they created in the first half. United continued to attack and both Graham sisters and Eva Norkeivicute came close but they didn’t increase their lead.
In 65th minute Bray appeared to have gotten one back when they believed the ball had crossed the goal line after a goalmouth scramble, Michele Moore cleared off the line and the referee ruled that all of the ball hadn’t crossed the line.
The second half was all Monaghan United but despite all their possession the score line remained 3-0 with the winning post in line, United eased up and the management availed of the opportunity to use up their subs.
This was a game that United approached with caution as Bray came here with a big reputation but they displayed little of it on the night and in the end it was a great result for Monaghan.
Team:- Michelle Mooney, Sinead Mc.Cooey, Michelle Moore, Katie O’Connor, Caoimhe Dolan, Sharon Mc Aree, Tessa Fleming, Micheala Newell, Charlene Graham. , Suzanne Gordon, Natasha Graham

Monaghan United v Eureka Kells.
On Sunday next Monaghan United take on Eureka Kells in the Quarter Finals of WFAI National Intermediate Cup.
To advance this far United defeated Albion Rovers of Drogheda and Leixlip United from Kildare. This will be a tough encounter for Monaghan United as Eureka have beaten them already this season 4-1 in the Dublin Intermediate Cup, but since that United have been displaying a lot of improvement in the League and they will be confident of reversing the earlier result.
Kick off at Kingspan Century Park on Sunday is at 3 p.m.
Premier A League
Ballyoulster FC. 0 - 3 Monaghan Utd
Monaghan United Ladies got back on the winning track on Monday night when they defeated Ballyoulster away 3 – 0. United went into this game missing a number of their key players through injury. However it was encouraging to see the players that came in their absence accounting well for themselves.
United dominated the first half but despite having numerous chances were unable to convert any of them. Eva Norkeivicute, Suzanne Gordon and Charlene Graham were proving a handful for the Ballyoulster defence and they well supported by Diane Dempsey and Selina Moynagh. Monaghan’s keeper Michelle Moloney had a quiet first half as her goals were rarely ever threatened. That first half ended scoreless.
From the restart Monaghan continued where they left off in the first half laying siege on Ballyoulster goal but they had to wait until the hour mark to take the lead, the goal came from a Charlene Graham cross which was met at the back post by her sister Natasha who had only been on the field 10 minutes in replacement for Selina Moynagh. United continued to attack and were awarded in the 75th.minute with their second score of the night when a Charlene Graham 20 yards strike hit the underside of the crossbar and rebounded off the keeper over the line.
United continued to press and the game was over as a contest when 5 minutes later Charlene Graham grabbed her second of the night when she got on the end of a great through ball from Micheala Newell and lobbed the out rushing keeper from the edge of the penalty box.
Ballyoulster tried to get something from the game and came into it very strongly for the last 10 minutes; this pressure resulted in United conceding a number of corners but the Utd defence of Sinead Mc Cooey, Sharon Mc Aree, Caoimhe Dolan and Katie O’Connor held firm to give Utd their first clean sheet of the season.
Team:- Michelle Moloney, Sinead Mc.Cooey, Katie O’Connor, Caoimhe Dolan, Sharon Mc Aree, Diane Dempsey,, Micheala Newell, Charlene Graham. Eva Norkeivicute, Suzanne Gordon, Selina Moynagh

Premier A League
Kilmore FC. 4 - 0 Monaghan United .
Utd Ladies record of 31 league games without defeat came to an abrupt end on Monday night when they were beaten 4-0 by a very strong Kilmore side in Dublin. This game was an exact replica of the Monaghan Utds men side when they were also beaten 4-0 by Sporting Fingal last Friday night. Both conceding 4 quick goals in the second half.
Utd ladies were forced unto the back foot straight from the start and had to work hard just to get out of their own half.Utd were limited to long range shots which never troubled the Kilmore keeper. The Utd defence battled hard throughout the half and kept Kilmore at bay but it was only a matter of time before Kilmore would take control of the game. H-T 0 -0.
Disaster struck Utd in the second half when Kilmore scored after only 2 mins. This early goal rocked Utd and before they could regroup,Utd found themselves 3 nil down within 15 mins.Credit to the Utd girls they picked themselves up and put Kilmore on the back foot but they were unable to break down the sweeper system used by Kilmore.Every time Utd got into the Kilmore penalty box, their sweeper was there to pick up the pieces. In the 70th min Kilmore wrapped the game up when they grabbed their fourth of the night when their right winger was left unchallenged at the back post and she coolly drilled the ball into the back of the net.
This was a comprehensive win for Kilmore who finished runners up to Utd last season.Utd ladies must now travel to Ballyoulster this coming Monday night in the league and a major improvement is needed if they have any aspirations of winning the Prem A League.
Utd will have keeper Julie Moran and midfielder Micheala Newell back but will be missing the services of Mary Croarkin and Orla Callan who are both out with long term injuries
WFAI _ Intermediate Cup
Leixlip Utd 1 v 4 Monaghan Utd Ladies
Utd ladies booked their place in the Q/Finals of the W.F.A.I. Intermediate Cup when they beat Leixlip Utd Ladies at the Leixlip Amenities Centre last Wednesday evening.
United got off to a dream start after only 4 mins when Sharon Mc Aree put Utd in the lead. Leixlip failed to clear the ball from a Utd corner and when the ball fell to the edge of the box, Mc Aree smash the ball into the roof of the net.
Leixlip put Utd on the back foot and were rewarded with an equaliser when this time Utd failed to clear the ball and the Leixlip striker blasted the ball through a crowded goal mouth into the Utd net.
Utd gradually took control of the game and shortly after Diane Dempsey hit the post, Charlene Graham grabbed her first of the night in the 42nd min when at the edge of the Leixlip penalty box she spotted the keeper off her line. Charlene coolly lobbed the keeper leaving her stranded in no mans land H-T 1 V 2.
Grahams goal at half time took the wind out of the Leixlip side and Utd dominated the second half from start to finish. Newcomer to the Utd team Selina Moynagh got her first ever goal in competitive soccer when she was at the back post to drill home Utds 3rd goal of the night from a Natasha Graham cross. Charlene Graham grabbed her second goal of the night when Utd were awarded a free kick 30 yards out from the Leixlip goal. Charlene spotted the keeper off her line again and she drove the ball high in to the Leixlip goal. The Leixlip keeper was unable to reach Charlene’s ball as it sailed into the roof of the net.
Utd had the ball in the Leixlip net for a fifth time but sub Erin Treanor was harshly judged to be offside.
This was one of Utds best performances of the season and now they await for this weeks draw to find out who their opponents will be on Aug 2nd.

WFAI INTERMEDIATE CUP
Monaghan United 2 -1 Albion Rovers.
Monaghan United moved into the last 16 in the WFAI Intermediate Cup when they defeated a very spirited young Albion Rovers side from Drogheda at Kingspan Century Park on Sunday evening last. Monaghan shaded the possession in the first half but a lapse of concentration in the 20 minute saw Albion take the lead. United failed to clear their line and Albion’s striker seized her opportunity well to fire home from close range.
However the lead was short lived and United’s prolific striker from last season Orla Callan made the most of a half chance 2 minutes later when she met a good cross ball from the wing to drill the ball low along the ground to the corner of the net. United upped the ante, Sinead Mc.Cooey Eva Norkeivi! cute made some very good attacking moves down the wings and Orla Callan, and Charelene Graham were proving a handful up front.
Albion had a couple of high long shots into the area but United’s keeper Julie Moran dealt very confidently with anything that came her way. Monaghan used the long quick ball out of defense and it was one such move that brought them their second goal on 43 minutes. Pamela Treanor played the ball over the heads of the Albion defenders, Orla Callan timed her run well controlled the ball and from 35 yard advanced on goal beating a number of the defenders until she was through one and one on an advancing keeper and from 18 yards Orla rifled the ball to the back of the net. That score allowed Monaghan United to go in for the halftime break in the lead.
Monaghan started the second half where they had left off before the interval but the visitors started to come more into the game and as the half progressed they started to dominate proceedings. Good defending from Suzanne Gordon, Pamela Treanor, Michelle Scott and Caoimhe Dolan and some fine goalkeeping from Julie Moran kept Albion from getting back on terms. Monaghan did well to keep a clean sheet.
United introduced new signing Diane Dempsey for Caoimhe Dolan after 75 minutes at mid field and for the short time she was on the pitch she looked very comfortable on the ball.
This was one of United’s poorer performances, the fact that their training has been interrupted due to exams etc. was evident, however one cannot complain when a side wins and they played well below their normal standards and in Albion Rovers they were playing a very young fit side who will be disappointed not to have got something from this game especially on their second half performance. Team Manager Seamus Finnegan was pleased with the win but will know his side will have to improve on this performance to advance further in the Cup.
The Team:- Julie Moran, Sinead Mc. Cooey, Michelle Scott, Suzann Gordon, Pamela Treanor, Caoimhe Dolan, Charelene Graham, Micheala Newell, Orla Callan, Eva Norkeivicute, Sharon Mc. Aree.
Subs used :- Natasha Graham, Diane Dempsey.
